WHAT IS A DEEP BITE?

Deep bite is a malalignment of your teeth where the upper front teeth come down too far behind your bottom front teeth on closing your mouth. In such cases, the upper front teeth almost completely overlap the lower front teeth vertically. In some cases deep bite may be so pronounced that the top edges of the lower teeth dig into the gum on the palate or roof of the mouth, potentially stripping the gums due to constant abrasion. This can be a very serious issue and often leads to loss of the front teeth.

WHAT DOES A DEEP BITE LOOK LIKE?

It is normal for your front bottom teeth to be visible a few millimeters or more. However, if the upper teeth overlap the lower teeth more than 4 mm, with almost no lower teeth visible on closing the mouth, it is known as a deep bite.

WHAT CAUSES DEEP BITE?

Deep bite may be hereditary, genetics being the major factor responsible for this malocclusion. When a person’s lower jaw is smaller than the upper jaw, there is a tendency to develop a deep bite. Missing teeth or a smaller lower jaw may also cause a deep bite. People who have grinding habits like bruxism or clenching their jaw may develop deep bite due to the constant wearing of their teeth.

 

IS IT BAD TO HAVE DEEP BITE IN MY TEETH?

Deep bite affects the facial aesthetics of a person but it is most detrimental to the teeth and health of the jaw joints. Deep bite may lead to larger issues to your oral health like sores or ulcers on the roof of your mouth due to stripping of the gum tissue of the palate.
